JAMES WOOD (DESIGN) PORTFOLIO
I most enjoy being at the convergence of data and design. My introduction to visualization came through business analytics but has grown to cover a wide range of topics, tools, and forms. Here you will find a selection of some of my work.
I began working with Tableau at the beginning of the 2020 COVID lockdown, using the tool to analyze and visualize the unfolding global health crisis. Since then, I have developed a Tableau Public portfolio of interactive dashboards covering a range of topics. Although very technical in nature, I have found delight in designing visualizations with this application.
Here you will find a small, but growing collection of data visualizations I have built using various design tools. These designs are intended to provide a visual explanation and abstraction of an idea or concept. These projects are fairly narrow and static in their output, as contrasted with more interactive and responsive dashboards.
GOOGLE DATA STUDIO
Data Studio is the tool that first introduced me to the joys of data visualization. It is an extremely versatile, powerful, and free tool provided by Google. I have used it in the context of business, marketing and SEO, and trend tracking. These dashboard elements are easily embedded as an iframe making them useful in a wide range of contexts.
We most commonly interact with data visualization virtually. I find physical, tangible, tactile experiences very powerful and interesting to interact with. I have been experimenting with the AxiDraw plotter as a way to digest and reframe data visualization, computer generated design, and art.
I started a desk making business in 2020, which served as my introduction to woodworking. My goal was to provide an affordable custom desk - providing a large work area for every space. Since then I have pursued many wood-based designs for my home. This process is very similar to other design applications - know your problem before finding/building your solution.
UX,UI, and MISC DESIGN PROJECTS
My application in user experience design has ranged from website design, marketing experience, and application design. Here you will find a selection of projects I have worked on over the last four years. Included here, I am providing some context for these projects and images to evidence some of the work completed.
